The title ‘artist’ has never felt quite right to me. But ‘maker’, that fits just right. And that’s what I do here. I make.
ToolBoxEarth is what I can do in a way no one else can. I began curiously exploring the world of fiber art during the COVID-19 pandemic. Weaving quickly transitioned from a past time to a lifeline used to communicate with the world that was just out of reach.
Art is language. I make exclusively with thrifted, upcycled, or naturally foraged materials. This allows me to live within my truest language by interacting with my surroundings, fellow humans, and to keep production costs low. So the original artwork here is accessible to everyone. And to do right by Mama Gaia.
I have always been a trickster by nature, Woolf-like. Creating a gentleness and fluidity between the ordinary and the unordinary is what I strive to do in my making process. Ethereal trickery, maybe. The fruition of curiosity leads to a pause for contemplation. For a moment of quiet focus. A rest. Let it begin with your eyes.
How I warp a thrifted picture frame and turn it into a loom that can then be woven into is my own design. It does not use any added implements such as nails, prongs, or studs. The weavings are built directly into the frame. What you have found at ToolBoxEarth is unique, like you and me.
But, you won't find us on any social media. In 2012 when the world was making the transition to smartphones and Instagram, I was back-country in the canyons of Utah working for environmental conservation. The world moved on without me and I don't intend to catch up. I like to keep things simple but that doesn't mean I'm not here for you.
I love and keep the Earth in mind always by using all sustainable and recycled supplies and packing material, as well as locally sourced from New York. It keeps me playfully engaged with what’s around, and how to build it into something else.
Please get in touch with questions and ideas- I want to hear them, grow them, and make them. Custom orders and your own curiosity are always welcome. Glad you found me. You are never an island.
