Abstract Bamboo Pendant, Fine Silver and Dichroic Glass, One of a Kind
This bamboo themed pendant necklace is one of a kind. I made it from fine silver and dichroic glass. The little fused dichroic glass cabochons make up the leaves of the bamboo. On the back there is a bamboo texture that is my own design. The pendant is on a 16" (40 cm) sterling silver snake chain with a lobster clasp. The front of the fine silver (.999) pendant is flat with three raised leaves made of different colors of dichroic glass. The narrow leaves have thick silver bezezls. I have arranged them in what I consider to be a pattern like bamboo. I would say it's a bamboo-inspired pattern! These were three small pieces of fused glass that I made myself in my kiln. One is blue-green, one is purple, and one is kind of a greenish stripe on black. They are rich, metallic looking colors and look great against the silver. The bail has a slightly less silver content, it is somewhere between .925 and .999. The back of the pendant has my own bamboo design, and is so pretty that some days you may want to just turn the pendant around. I used a texture plate that I made myself to put the design in the metal. I can do this, because I made this pendant through a process/material known as metal clay. This is clay that is mixed with microscopic bits of silver. After I made the pendant, I fired it in my kiln. The high temperatures burned away all the organic material in the clay, leaving only the silver (and the glass leaves.) After firing, I hardened and polished the silver. As a finishing touch, I have added a seamed sterling silver (.925) snake chain. Bamboo is ubiquitous in Chinese culture. We had a lot of bamboo in our apartment complex. Of the four gentlemen (or seasons), bamboo represents summer. Of course, I also have to mention that it's one of the four suits in Majong. Because it's hollow inside, an artist once said: ""Bamboo, who understands humility by emptying his heart, (without stuffing it with arrogance) is my teacher." So among other things, it also represents humility. This pendant won first place in professional crafts at the Kosciusko County Fair in 2014. There is only one of these, so if you like it, buy it now before it's gone!
