This cheese cutter is made from Birdseye Maple. Birdseye maple is a fairly rare type of figure found in certain maples and is characterized by a distinctive pattern that resembles tiny, swirling eyes disrupting the smooth lines of grain. While no scientific evidence has been presented to verify the cause of this pattern, one theory is that it is caused by unfavorable growing conditions for the tree. It is thought that the tree attempts to start numerous new buds to get more sunlight, but with poor growing conditions the new shoots are aborted, and afterward a number of tiny knots remain. Birdseye maple is used for musical instruments, furniture, and small items such as jewelry boxes due to its unique figure. The cutter measures 6” by 10” by 7/8” and rubber feet are included. Multiple coats of hand rubbed oil based finish have been applied and over-coats of wipe-on varnish have been added for durability. The finish is completely food safe. If cleaning is required, hand wash with mild detergent, rinse and dry. This cheese cutter is shown with a black arm and handle. A chrome arm and handle is available as an option. You can see examples of this option on some of my other listings. If you prefer the chrome arm and handle, just leave me a note on the order.
