This cherry burl end table measures approximately 19 by 23 1/2 inches and is 24 1/2 inches high. Table top thickness is 2 3/8 inches. Cherry Burl is a domestic wood that is highly valued because of its combination of rich red color combined with the twisted grain and eyes that occurs in the burled wood. A burl results from a tree undergoing some form of stress. It may be caused by an injury, virus or fungus. Burls yield a very peculiar and highly figured wood, prized for its beauty and rarity. Large natural cracks & voids have been filled with black epoxy. Small checks and cracks and other natural imperfections remain as is and are typical of natural edge tables. The finishing process begins by sanding through various grits up to 800 grit. Next two coats of oil based finish are applied to bring out the depth and figure of the wood. This is followed by at least 4 coats of varnish to provide a durable top coat. Finally, a coat of finishing wax is applied and hand buffed.
